Introducing Woodworking Tools

When we are doing woodworking, we process the wood or pieces of wood so that they can be used for making a project. Wood is tough. The toughness of lumber does not allow us to process without help from tools. We need to perform various actions on wood, such as cutting, sawing and slicing. To perform a specific action on the wood, we mush have the proper tool. We need the right tools to process the wood into the shape we need for the project.

Woodworker tools can be generalized into 3 categories, namely hand tools, power tools and machinery. If you are just trying out in woodworking, it’s not a good idea to buy the whole range of tools that you may not even need. It will be costly to buy a large selection of tools. Affordability is not really the issue, rather the need for a specific piece of tool.

Hand tools are essentially tools which you work with your hand without any electricity. These will include tools such as hammer, chisel, saw, try square, triangles, tape measure, sandpaper and rasps. When a tool requires external power source, it is considered a power tool or woodwork machine. These electric-driven tools are undoubtedly more costly, though some of the portable power tools are quite affordable. Portable power tools allow you to be more mobile when you are working, without worrying about entangling of the cables around you or your workspace. Furthermore, power tools and machinery will undoubtedly speed things up for you in your woodwork. And, some of the machineries allow you to do fancier woodwork, which otherwise can be difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish using only hand tools.

For a beginner woodworker, it’s not necessary to have a full set of tools to begin your hobby. You only require a basic set of hand tools to start with. Hand tools can go a long way in your woodworking craft even without power tools or machinery. Here is a list of basic tools for a novice woodworker:

-    Claw hammer
-    Wood chisels
-    Screwdrivers
-    Levels
-    Try Square
-    Framing Squares
-    Triangles
-    Tape measures
-    Sandpaper
-    Screws and Nails
-    Clamps
-    Hand Plane
-    Vises
-    Rasps
-    Glue
-    Carpenter’s Pencils
-    Safety Glasses or goggles

The list of woodworker tools above should be enough for any beginners to begin working on their hobby. Please do not ignore the last item, safety glasses, on the list. Though safety glass is not really a tool, it is certainly essential to wear them whenever you are using tools or doing work which is potentially dangerous.

Tools are very important for woodwork DIY. As in all things we do, whether it is fixing or repairing things around the house, using the right tool is always the universal rule rather than the exception. It is essential to realize that using the right tool not only gets the job done properly but also provides you the needed safety in your work.

Shop around before you buy the tools. If you are committed to woodworking as a long term hobby, it will be wise to acquire a good set of tools which will last you for many years.
